Elizabeth Warren Will Make Business Work for All Americans

By Richard Coleman, Stafford County Democratic Committee Member

We need Elizabeth Warren, because Elizabeth Warren will make business work for all Americans. Most Americans associate the quote “the business of America is business” with Calvin Coolidge. Historians have debated the exact phrase, the context and the idea that Coolidge was trying to express. But the public has accepted that quote as an endorsement for government support of business friendly policies. For Americans to prosper and enjoy the fruits of our labor we need a strong economy that allows for the exchange of goods and services. And a robust network of business is what drives that strong economy.

Most proponents for pro-business policies proclaim that what is good for business is good for America. But what is good for one industry may not be good for every industry. What is good for investors may not be good for workers. We should have policies that recognize the need to balances what is best for investors, workers and customers. For too long pro-business policies have narrowly focused on the short-term goal of maximizing profit for investors and shielding business from the inevitability of obsolescence. But Elizabeth Warren understands that the best pro-business policy is one that ensures that business supports the needs of all Americans.

Elizabeth Warren has outlined policies on a range of topics including tax policy, climate change, health care, economic, wages and more. She is labeled as a progressive and we may debate how far on a progressive path we need to travel. But progressive policies will move us towards ensuring that all Americans are treated as valued component of the economy and not just as cogs to be exploited. I am sure Elizabeth Warren is who we need to lead us on that path.
